Dominique waited near the window for Manny to arrive. He’d called shortly after she’d spoken with Alan and told her he’d set up an appointment with a divorce attorney. “He comes highly recommended,” he’d advised her.

She didn’t know what she would have done these past weeks without Manny. He’d been her rock, the thing her husband should have been.

Her heart ached when she thought about Clif. She knew things had been strained between the two of them, but never in her wildest dreams had she imagined that it would have come to this.

Manny told her that Clifton contacted him several times wanting to know about her. Dominique was adamant about not letting him know anything. She didn’t want to risk talking to him and giving in to his smooth talk and his charming ways. Clifton had the innate ability to make you believe whatever he wanted you to believe. In time, he would be able to convince her that what she had seen in her bedroom was not what she’d thought she’d seen at all. That’s how good he was. It was that skill that had made him so successful as her manager all these years.

They’d worked so well together. Right up to this moment she still could not understand what changed him, what changed them.

She heard the car pull up in front of her house. She peeked out the window. It was Manny. She popped a mint into her mouth, got her purse and jacket and walked out.

“Percy Silver is one of the best,” Manny was saying as they pulled off. “He’s hard-nosed but discrete when necessary. He’s worked with some of the biggest names in the business.”

Dominique nodded, but didn’t respond.

He thought he caught the faintest scent of alcohol. “Are you okay?”

“Fine. I guess. This is a big step.”

“Are you sure this is what you want to do?”

“Yes,” she said unequivocally. “I just want it to be over as soon as possible so that I can move on with my life.” She stared out the window. “Has he called again?”

“Not in a few days.”

“Hmm.”

“At least the papers have latched on to a new story,” he said. “Damn shame about Conners’ wife.”

She swallowed. “Yes, I saw it on the news.”

“But once it gets out about your divorce, you will be back front and center.”

Her head snapped in his direction. “I thought you said this guy was discrete.”

“He is, but the media isn’t. There’s always someone digging for a story. It’s bound to come out. You need to prepare yourself for that.”

Life would be so much simpler if she were just a regular person, she thought. At the very least her personal life wouldn’t interest the entire world. Manny was right, all the discretion in the world wouldn’t keep the media from sniffing around. Once the divorce was final it became public domain.

At this point she no longer cared. She simply wanted out. She wanted to put her life with Clifton behind her no matter how much it hurt. What had gone so wrong? The question continued to haunt her.
